It’s a big morning for Australian cricket fans as some crucial decisions were made ahead of the 2021/22 Ashes test series at home. With all the controversy around the texting scandal, Tim Paine last week has resigned from the role as Australian test captain but had initially made himself available for selection. However, that has now changed as he’s taken an indefinite break from the game.
He’s obviously had a lot to cope with his his sexting scandal hit the roof and went public. Hate from fans, social media and of course, a family to save as well. He’s had a week to think about it and this morning, he announced taking an indefinite mental health break from the game. Now 36 years old, this may even be the end of his international career as you know it.
As Paine has time to sort out his mess, Cricket Australia took the chance to announce their new captain for Ashes 2021/22 and they believed that fast bowler Pat Cummins was the right person to take over. They even announced Steve Smith as his deputy, returning to the vice-captain role in the longest format. As for Cummins, he becomes the 47th Test captain for Australia!
“I am honored to accept this role ahead of what will be a massive Ashes summer. I hope I can provide the same leadership Tim (Paine) has given the group in the past few years,” said Cummins in a statement, saying it was an unexpected surprise for him. He is the #1 Test bowler in the world and why not? The intensity is increasing before the series which we know will be a good one!
