Improving Cancer Diagnostics with Circulating Tumor Cells in Blood

Profiling circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from the blood is an attractive alternative to invasive and painful biopsies for cancer diagnosis. However, their low abundance, contamination with blood cells, and cell death during purification create barriers for the technique’s successful adoption in clinics. To circumvent these problems, researchers turn to single-cell technology to enrich CTCs from the blood and determine tumor characteristics.
